Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Additional Information

FACTS

  • In the U.S., there will be 1,780 children that will die from cancer this year alone.

  • In the U.S., 47 children per day hear the words, “you have cancer.” That’s 17,155 children who will be diagnosed with cancer every year.

  • Childhood cancer rates and overall incidences are on the rise, increasing by 0.9% per year.

  • “Childhood cancer” is not one disease. There are actually 12 major cancers with 100 subtypes.

  • The National Cancer Institute (NCI) only spends 3.98% to 4.08% on childhood cancer research per year. That’s roughly what the NCI will spend on one adult cancer type. This means childhood cancer research is grossly underfunded.

  • Since 1980, the FDA has only approved 6 drugs for childhood cancer treatments. Using adult treatments on children causes many troubling side effects.

  • More than 95% of cancer survivors will have a significant health issue by the age of 45. Most commonly, this is due to the results of their harsh treatments.

  • On average, there are 70 potential life years lost when a child dies from cancer (compared to 15 potential life years lost for adults).

The time for change is now.

The NCI has to increase their budget on childhood cancer research.

Let’s come together as one voice and be heard.

Thank You For Your Loving Support Since 2021

February 19, 2023 marked two years since our beloved GG was fitted with angel wings.

We would like to send a huge thank you to our family, friends, and community members who have performed so many beautiful tributes in Gianna's name these past couple years.

It has meant so much to her family.

Please continue to do so, and send us your memories, memorials and love whenever you see fit.

We will continue to post tributes here, and upcoming charitable endeavors on The Gianna Effect Foundation website.
